Artist Statement & Bio

I have always known that I was an artist. I decided this (or accepted this) when I was a child, and although life has taken me in many directions, this one thing has remained true. We are all natural-born creators, and this creativity is constantly broadcast through our thoughts, moods, and actions. Whether it appears as a cup of coffee or a masterpiece in oils, human beings are continuously communicating through creativity. The focus of my work is to communicate the truth, as I see it, and the relationship between artist and subject. I work to share this intimate interpretation honestly and without any attachment to the form it takes. With a deep respect for each subject, I focus my attention on what I find compelling, and I allow the picture to reveal itself.

After all these years of practice and playing, my work has become an exercise of letting go, trusting my skills and instinct, and enjoying creating like a child again, filled with a sense of freedom and wonder.

Stacey Turner holds a degree from the Art Institute of Philadelphia, 1991. She was the founder and sole proprietor of Already Artists Studio & Little Gallery in Annapolis, MD. From 2003 to 2013, she offered innovative art instruction to children aged 2 to 18 years that focused on honoring and preserving the individual vision of each student while introducing them to a wide variety of materials and techniques. After 10 years of teaching, Stacey closed Already Artists in 2013 to concentrate on her painting. Then, in 2014, she had the opportunity to co-found a new teaching and art retail facility in Annapolis, ArtFarm. For the next 3 years, Stacey continued to teach her special brand of art classes to the children of ArtFarm before, once again, leaving there to dedicate herself to painting and sculpting. In the Fall of 2018, she was recruited to teach a customized, 3-month art program for children aged 2 to 6 years at Little Learning in New York, NY. Stacey now teaches at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts and works from her in-home studio in Annapolis, MD.  She lives there with her youngest son and their two dogs.

The Magic of Already Artists

I didn't intend to be a teacher, nor did I really think of myself as one. I was an artist with a studio, and children were invited in as artists (already) themselves. I believe it was the philosophy of mutual respect for all artistic expression that made it such a successful venture and joyous time. While protecting the innate, creative spirit of all the young artists, I found limitless inspiration and a renewed sense of freedom. It was an essential stage in my personal and artistic evolution. I am eternally grateful for this shared education and the great time we had together.
